How to Make Soap With a Melt-and-Pour Base

1

Step 1: Chop and Melt. Cut the base into small cubes so it melts evenly, then melt it gently in a double boiler or in short 30-second microwave bursts, stirring between each. The one rule is not to overheat and burn it.

2

Step 2: Add Scent, Color, and Actives. Once melted, stir in a fragrance or essential oil, a cosmetic colorant, and any extras like a clay, exfoliant, or botanical. Add at a low level so you do not soften or cloud the bar.

3

Step 3: Pour and Spritz. Pour into your mold and spritz the top with rubbing alcohol to pop any surface bubbles. Layer or swirl colors if you want a design.

4

Step 4: Set and Unmold. Let the soap cool and set, usually a few hours to overnight, then pop it out of the mold. There is no lye to handle and no weeks of curing, so it is ready to use right away.

About Melt-and-Pour Soap Bases

A melt-and-pour soap base is soap that has already been made for you. It is fully saponified, which means the lye has already reacted and is gone, so you never handle lye, and there is no weeks-long cure to wait through. You simply melt the base, personalize it, and pour it into a mold, which makes melt-and-pour the easiest and safest way to start making soap. The base you choose sets the character of the bar: glycerine and transparent bases make bright, clear, colorful soaps, goat milk and shea bases are creamy and nourishing for dry or sensitive skin, and active bases like neem, charcoal, turmeric, and oatmeal target specific skin needs.
Customizing is where your brand comes in. Melt gently, then add fragrance, color, exfoliants, or botanicals at a low level so the bar stays firm and clear. Every base here is documented and made in a WHO-GMP and ISO 9001:2015 certified facility with a COA on request. Personalize your bars with our fragrance oils, essential oils, colours, and add texture with our cosmetic scrubs. For making soap from scratch with lye, see additives and lyes

Good to Know

• Do not overheat the base. Burnt soap base is ruined. Melt slowly in a double boiler or short microwave bursts, stirring between each, and stop as soon as it is liquid.

• Spritz with alcohol for a clean top. A quick spray of rubbing alcohol on the poured surface pops surface bubbles, and it also helps layers of soap bond when you build a design.

• Add extras at a low level. Too much fragrance, color, or add-in can soften the bar or make it sweat. Follow suggested rates so your soap sets firm and stays looking clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

A melt-and-pour soap base is pre-made, fully saponified soap that you melt, customize, and pour into molds. Because the lye has already reacted during manufacture, you never handle lye and there is no curing period. It is the easiest, most beginner-friendly way to make soap and is ready to use as soon as it sets.

Chop the base into small cubes, melt it gently in a double boiler or short microwave bursts while stirring, then mix in your fragrance, color, and any actives. Pour into a mold, spritz the top with rubbing alcohol to remove bubbles, and let it set for a few hours to overnight before unmolding.

Melt-and-pour uses a ready base, so there is no lye to handle and no cure time, making it fast and safe for beginners. Cold-process soap is made from scratch by mixing lye with oils, which gives full control over the recipe but requires careful lye handling and four to six weeks of curing. Melt-and-pour trades some control for a lot of convenience.

It depends on the bar you want. Glycerine and transparent bases are best for bright, colorful, clear soaps. Goat milk and shea bases are creamy and nourishing for dry or sensitive skin. Active bases like charcoal, neem, and turmeric target specific concerns. Many soapmakers keep a clear base and a creamy base on hand for different designs.

Yes, that is the whole point of customizing. Once the base is melted, stir in essential or fragrance oils and cosmetic colorants at the recommended rate, along with any exfoliants or botanicals. Add at a low level, since too much can soften the bar or cause it to sweat, then pour and set.

No. That is the main advantage of melt-and-pour. The base has already been fully saponified during manufacture, so the lye has reacted and none remains to handle. You get to make and customize soap without working with caustic lye, which is why it is recommended for beginners and for making soap with children nearby.

Melt-and-pour soap sets as it cools, usually within a few hours to overnight depending on the size of the bar and the room temperature. Once firm, you can unmold and use it right away, with no curing period. For a firmer bar and cleaner release, letting it set overnight is a safe bet.
